What does the treatment involve?

During treatment we use a hand held device that hovers over the skin to deliver very targeted pulses of Ultrasound deep into the layers of the skin. Treatment time varies depending on the area being treatment but generally ranges from 1-2 hours from beginning to end. During treatment it is normal to experience a slight pricking or aching feeling. This will subside immediately once the treatment is finished.

How many treatments will I need?

We recommend one or two treatments spaced 6 months apart. Then repeat one treatment every 2-3 years to maintain results.

How long will the results last?

HIFU results will continue to improve gradually for up to 6 months following treatment and results will last on average 18 months to three years. Individual results will differ slightly.

Who can have this treatment?

A good candidate for HIFU is someone who has mild to moderate skin laxity.

This treatment is not recommended for people who have dermal fillers within the treatment area, open lesions or wounds, cystic acne, a history of keloid scarring, implanted electrical devices (pacemakers etc) or metal implants in the treated area, pregnancy or breastfeeding, bells palsy, heart disease, hypertension, liver, kidney or skin disease or for those who have been on Roaccutane in the last 6 months. We do not recommend HIFU Face treatment for those that have little to no facial volume.

Pre and Post care information

There may be some discomfort while the ultrasound energy is being delivered however comfort thresholds vary from client to client. This is temporary and a positive signal that the collagen-building process has been initiated. If you choose to, you may use light pain medication to increase comfort during the treatment. 

After treatment you may experience slight redness on the treatment area for up to an hour after the treatment however HIFU is a non-invasive procedure and there is no downtime. You are able to return to normal activities immediately. A small percentage of client’s experience mild tenderness, swelling or muscle soreness in the treatment area for hours to days post treatment.

How should I prepare my skin for a Dermapen 3™ Treatment?

For optimal results, an appropriate regime should be determined by your clinician to encourage the skin to strengthen (especially for thin or delicate skin areas). Continue to use recommended products by your clinician after the treatments for a period of 6 weeks.

How long should it take before I see results?

Typically, you will see results after the first treatment. Lasting and more significant results will become visible after 4 to 6 treatments (spaced 4-6 weeks apart). The condition of your skin will continue to improve over the next 6-12 months after a course of treatments, especially when combined with the recommended post-treatment care.

Is the treatment painful?

Is there any downtime after treatments?

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is the use of extreme cold produced by liquid nitrous oxide for the fast, effective and safe solution for the controlled destruction of unwanted skin imperfections.

The CryoPen™ is a FDA and CE registered advanced cryotherapy innovation. It is a pen-like instrument which delivers a fine pinpoint spray of liquid nitrous oxide at a constant temperature of minus-127 degrees under high pressure which allows the therapist to work with millimetre precision. This means the nitrous oxide is delivered directly to the treated area and not to the healthy surrounding tissue.

Age/sun spots are caused by an excess production of melanin due to skin aging and sun exposure or other forms of ultraviolet light exposure, such as tanning beds. They are most likely to develop on the areas of your skin that receive the most sun exposure, including the face, back of hands, chest, shoulders and forearms.

How are lesions destroyed during cryotherapy?

The applicator is held as close as possible to the skin imperfection and moved quickly towards and away from it. This could be from 1-30 seconds, depending on the size and depth of the lesion. The CryoPen™ freezes at a rate of approximately 1mm per 5 seconds.

The nitrous oxide destroys the tissue by freezing the inter-cellular fluid in a matter of seconds, forming ice shards and crystals which rupture the membrane, thereby destroying the cell. That means there will be no collateral damage to healthy tissue. It’s so incredibly accurate and practical.

Is there pain with the procedure?

There will be a mild sensation similar to a stinging nettle on the skin when the nitrous oxide reaches the bottom of the area. There might be a little residual stinging for a few minutes after treatment and the area can be slightly itchy for about 10 minutes after the procedure. Most patients get an anaesthetic effect from the extreme freezing temperatures.

What does the area look like after treatment?

During the procedure, the area freezes and turns white. After this white area thaws, a flushing occurs and the area will turn red and a weal will form. After 2-24 hours after being frozen the weal may turn into a blister which may take several days to dissolve, however this is very rare. A crust will form over the lesion, which typically, after about 10 to 14 days, will fall off and the skin will then be healed. The skin may appear lighter in colour or pink, which then returns to its normal colour over a period of a few weeks. Lesions treated on the legs often take a little more time to heal.

For larger and deeper lesions a second crust may form making the healing time slightly longer.

Although it is best to try to leave the treated area uncovered, a plaster or simple dressing may be applied if it is in an area which may lead to rubbing and aggravation. It is important not to pick at the crust as this may lead to scarring.

Will there be scarring?

Rarely. Both hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) and hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin) may occur temporarily after cryotherapy. Both generally last for a maximum of a few months. Pigment change is more common in darker skin types.

What areas can be treated?

Many different superficial skin lesions can be treated with cryotherapy including viral warts, seborrhoeic keratosis, actinic keratosis and other benign lesions. It is essential that a correct diagnosis is made before treatment as we do not treat any cancerous lesions as these are more appropriately managed and followed up on the NHS. If a lesion looks suspicious of skin cancer, you will be advised to seek advice from your General Practitioner.

How permanent is the cure?

For most lesions, cryosurgery is a permanent removal. Some lesions are harder to remove than others. In more delicate places eg the eye area, a shorter freeze time with a repeat procedure may be required to get a final result with the least damage to the surrounding skin. In other instances a deep lesion eg a verruca or a wart may take several aggressive treatments to get final results

What types of lesions should not be frozen?

All melanomas and recurrent basal cell carcinomas. Melanoma can spread by any of several means including local, lymphatic and blood. Additionally, Melanoma will change to a much more aggressive form if part of the lesion is left behind undetected. Basil cell carcinoma is typically spread by local extension and you may need more extensive surgery if recurrence is suspected.

Can anyone have cryosurgery?

Yes, however, cautions about skin type and location should be considered prior to deciding on freeze times. People with high levels of cryo globulins should be treated with caution.

What if I have darker skin?

Repeated short freezing cycles of 3 to 6 seconds at two week intervals are recommended if you have a darker skin type. For very dark skinned people, you may not want to have cryosurgery, as it will kill the melanocytes around the treated area, making the skin in that area lighter.

Can I have the treatment in the Summer months?

The treatment can be performed at any time of the year. During the Summer months, a sun protection factor 50 (SPF50) must be applied at least 30 before sun exposure and reapplied every 4 hours.

Excessive skin on the face, neck, and upper and lower eyelids can be tightened by  plasma treatment. Lines around the mouth (peri-oral rhytids) and crow’s feet can also be improved.

The generated plasma arc gently tightens the skin without open wounds, sutures or long downtime, as is the case with surgical face or eyelid (blepharoplasty) procedures. Younger clients, normally turned away by plastic surgeons, and patients with health problems too risky for surgical procedures, may be treated safely with this plasma device. In a Plasma treatment there is no damage to the skin but only a superficial thermal skin reaction. With proper treatment technique, no scars are created and the tightening is long-lasting.

The skin treated with the plasma device immediately exhibits a “shrinking” effect, however continued improvement is observed over the next 6-8 weeks. The skin heals very quickly due to small area treated and the intact skin around the treatment site. Fibroblasts are stimulated to create new collagen fibres and an ‘over- tightening’ is not possible with this treatment.

Plasma treatment is virtually painless and a tightening effect can be seen immediately after treatment.  There will be mild swelling of the treated area for a few days then some small scabs will form, these remain for about 7 days and then will naturally slough off.
